Lesson 13: Kinds of Jihad

Kinds of Jihad:

Some important types of Jihad are given below.

Jihad against desire of Nafs (Jihad Binafs): Man's own desires are the first thing to stop from Allah's obedience. These sensual desires are always active and a person needs to be alert against them. Fight against these desires of nafs has been regarded as Jihad -e-Akbar, by the Prophet. This is that stage of Jihad, without winning it.a person can not be successful in other battle fields.

Jihad against Satan (Jihad Bishaitan): After controlling one own nafs, it is important to deal with those devils, which persuade people to surrender to them., The Holy Quran takes all types of evil as Taghoot!

Allah says is Quran:

الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ الله وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ الطَّاغُوتِ (سورة النساء 76)

Translation: Those who believe, fight in the cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of taghut (Shaitan).

These forces of evil are found in Islamic societies in the form of wrong traditions and customs and in the form of non muslim countries dominance of Muslim societies Therefore, the strategies to deal with these evil forces are varied. At some places, these are dealt with speech and writing and at some places with the help of power and force. The holy Quran gives a comprehensive instruction in this regard.

Translation: And argue with them in a way that is best.

If the true spirit of Jihad lies in one's heart, then vision of faithfulness shows appropriate ways in every opportunity. In this regard, this saying of Prophet provides best guidance.

Translation: When any one of you sees an evil act, stop it with your hands and if he does not have this capacity, then through his tongue, and if this power is not there, then think it bad at your heart (and thinking evil bad in heart) and this is the weakest degree of faith.

According to this hadees, three ranks of faith become evident.

(i). Stopping evil with hands

(ii) Stopping evil with tongue

(iii) To consider it bad in heart.

Jihad Bilmaal: It means to do Jihad using wealth. The significance of this can be. known by this fact that with the commandment of Jihad, the order of Jihad Bilmaal is also given."

Allah says in Holy Quran:

وَجَاهِدُوا بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ وَأَنْفُسِكُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ (التوبة: 41)

Translation: And strive with your wealth and your lives in the cause of Allah. Jihad with knowledge (Jihad Bil Ilm): Jihad bit Ilm means to do Jihad using your knowledge. All corruption, fights and mischief taking place in a society are the result of ignorance. The elimination of illiteracy and ignorance is not possible without knowledge, For enlightening the torch of knowledge, we have to eliminate ignorance from our society.

Jihad Bil qalam (Jihad by using pen): It means to do Jihad using writing. In this modern age, Islam could be spread using pen. Through one's writings, the knowledge of Quran and hadees could be promoted.

Jihad using tongue (Jihad bil lisaan): It is done using speech, when, a tongue of someone becomes the source of spreading Islam, then this is Jihad bil lisaan preaching Islam and replying to the objections of enemies of Islam are the part of this Jihad.

The Holy Prophet said:

جَاهِدُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ وَأَنْفُسِكُمْ وَالْسِنَتِكُمْ (سنن ابي داود )

Translation: Fight against those who associate partners (with Allah) through your wealth, your lives and you' tongue.

Jihad with sword (Jihad bisaif): There is a point in the struggle between truth and falsehood, when evil forces in attempt to stop truth and to finish it come in front and start war against truth. Then, Muslims have to fight against them for the protection of their religion and Muslim ummah. There are two kinds of it.

Defensive Jihad: If any non muslim power attacks a muslim country, then Jihad becomes mandatory for the muslims of that country for the protection of their faith, riches and honor. Any attempt to safeguard a Muslim society against the dominance and influence of non-Muslims would be regarded Defensive Jihad. A kind, of defensive Jihad is that when Muslims of any non-Muslim country are brutalized and victimized because of being Muslims, then Islamic world must try utmost to get those Muslim freed from that cruelty.

Corrective Jihad: A person who witnesses Allah's sovereignty and Holy Prophet's obedience, it is binding on him to strive hard in the whole world to implement shariah of Prophet and sovereignty of Allah. The establishment of deen-e-Haq is an eminent objective of Prophet hood of Hazrat Muhammad. Allah says:

Translation: It is He who has sent His messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religions. Although, they who associate others with Allah dislike it.

Translation: And fight them until there is no fitna and (until) the religion, all it is for Allah.
